Joseph Stoltz is our Principal Surveyor he holds B.S. and M.S. degrees with an emphasis on analytical chemistry. He has worked as a coatings formulation chemist and has a unique understanding of coatings, resin formulation and application techniques from having formulated specialized coatings for industry and then overseeing commercial scale up.
Joe has also worked as a consultant performing environmental site assessments for legal firms and lenders prior to commercial property transfers.A formal training in science and years of work with legal firms and lenders have taught Joe the importance of careful observation, documentation, interpretation of data and how to report the findings using clear language and format. Joe has over 25 years experience involving the operation, building and repairing of boats. In the 1990's he owned and operated a company specializing in yacht maintenance, interior / exterior refinishing, joinery work and fiberglass repair. Joe is a very experienced in fiberglass and composite repair. Joe learned auto body repair in high school and then put himself through college by working as a "Glass & Paint Man" in the summers repairing/painting cars and boats. In addition to practical hands-on experience, Joe has been educated in Marine Surveying, Advanced Marine Surveying, Introduction to Marine Wiring and Wooden Boat Planking at the Newport International Yacht Restoration School. He also attended classes in Wooden Boat Building and Lofting at Mystic Seaport. Joe is certified by the American Sailing Association on Cruising Catamarans and has delivered one from Maine to Connecticut. Since then Joe has also skippered several 40+ foot cruising catamarans in the US and British Virgin Islands. In 2009 Joe applied to and was accepted into the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMSŪ) as a Survey Associate. In order to be accepted, Joe had to pass an exam, present examples of survey reports, document his marine experience / training and provide references from SAMSŪ members. Joe's application and surveys were then reviewed by the main office, regional and national directors before membership was granted. As a SAMSŪ member, Joe abides to a strict code of ethics and has access to a network of SAMSŪ surveyors to which he can consult with in a cooperative and collegial atmosphere. Access to a knowledge base with collectively hundreds of years experience in surveying is a great advantage and ensures a quality answers to questions. Institutions in the marine industry are familiar with the qualifications needed to become a member of SAMSŪ and know that SAMSŪ surveyors follow an extensive "Recommended Survey Report Content" document. Consequently, the chances of a survey report being rejected by your insurer are minimized. Joe regularly attends continuing education courses in order to stay current in the field and maintain his SAMSŪ membership. Joe is a member of the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) has attained certification in ABYC Standards & Technical Information Reports for Small Craft. An active cat boat racer in several associations, Joe is also a past member of the East Coast Sailing Association and Mystic River Mudhead Sailing Association where he skippered or was foredeck crew on several large keel boats.
